MARK ADLINGTON 1944-2009 - A TRIBUTE
Mark spent his early working life as a postman. He subsequently joined London Transport, firstly as a conductor, and then a driver driving RT buses at Amersham.
One of his hobbies was building an Underground layout which led to the construction of a model of 55 Broadway, the headquarters of London Transport, from scratch. He spent months travelling up to London with a sketch pad and camera and using people as a guide to scale his drawings. Made from card and balsa wood, it makes an impressive model by any standards.
Mark turned his attention to building two garages from scratch, Brixton and then Amersham. Materials such as balsa wood for the roof trusses and plasticine for the lamps were used, together with any other useful items at hand. Mark used photographs from books and private collections to get his details - he never used proprietary items; everything was hand-built. Eventually lack of space meant the Underground layout had to go. The model of 55 Broadway, however, survived and is now in the hands of the London Transport Museum, complete with full interior detailing.
Mark would often make up John Howe’s garage kits for his good friend Roger Shaw who altered and provided the correct destination and garage codes for his EFE buses. Thanks to Roger for sending me the pictures for all to see: we think it is a fitting memorial to a very gentle man who had an eye for detail and a lot of patience.
